How water softeners function

Here is a step by-step guide to how water softeners operate. But, before we do that, let’s talk about what hardwater is and how it can affect your household. Hard water can cause many problems such as blocked drains and showerheads. It can also cause stiff clothing from washing, staining bathroom tiles, and soap scum in dishes – extra resources.

Hard water is caused in part by too much magnesium, calcium, and other minerals in your tap water. A home water conditioner system for your whole house can improve the water quality. Soft water will bring you softer clothes, less soapy scum, and less calcium deposits in your taps, drains or shower heads.

Here are some facts about how water-softeners work.

1. Ion Exchange Process. This process removes water from hardness using sodium or potassium. The hard ions are removed from the water after hard water passes through resin beads. The sodium and potassiumions are then released back into your water. There is an exchange between ions which can lead to hardness and softness.

2. Service Cycle: Water passes through a tube at the top of the tank, then flows through the portion that contains the resin. The ion swap process is used to collect hardness-causing elements as water passes through resin. The softened water is then passed through slots. Finally, the valve pushes the water through your water pipes to release it.

3. Backwash cycle – Another procedure that is part of how water softers work is the backwash. The water flows from the source through a valve to the riser tub and through a collector. This system mixes and filters the resin to remove turbidity and contaminants.

4. Brine draw Cycle – This is the 2nd step in the regeneration process. The educator collects the salt or brine and puts it in the valve. Brine flows through a resin exchange, and the hard components are collected in the resin layer. This process continues until all liquids in the brine tanks have been transferred to the softener tank.

5. Slow Rinse Cycle. This is a continuous flow water through the educator from the top at the tank to its bottom as it passes through resin. This rinses out the resin of any brine or hard elements. The water flows into a lower collector where it reaches the riser via an opening that points towards the drain.

6. Fast Rinse Cycle. During this process, water enters at the top of softener tank and flows quickly through the resin. This high rate of water flow helps to compact the resin bed and eliminates any residual hardness and brine.

7. Refill cycle – The last step to water softeners working is filling up the brine reservoir with water. 3 pounds of salt is dissolved per gallon. As the water is filled, the air-check balls floats. The air-checkball determines the level by analyzing time. Fast rinse is used during the softening. After the tank is filled, the softener can be used again during the service cycle.
